"Training, Networking And Capacity Building For Sustainable Forest Management in Povolgie"
The objective of the project
The main objective of the project is to strengthen institutional changes and capacities of the forest sector of the Russian Federation. The main activities of the project will be focused on development of the conditions, methodological provision, infrastructure and staff's capacity in Mari State Technical University with the help and expertise of EU consortium organizations. During the project it is planned to (re)train chief foresters from the forestry enterprises of the Privolzski Federal district and authorities of Federal Forestry Agencies with respect to the state-of-art of sustainable forest management. Considerable part of the project has been devoted to the development of new courses, distance learning class and network of forestry enterprises in the region in order to continue the training after the project.

The objectives of the project
Develop systematic supplying and open specialization "International cooperation in Sustainable Forest Management" in Mari State Technical University. Establish "Centre of Sustainable Forestry" to popularize the results of the Project in Povolgie.
The goals of the project are to
- Develop new curriculum for specialization "International cooperation in Sustainable Forest Management".
- Organize Internship for MarSTU teaching staff in European Universities-partners to develop new school-books and methodological material.
- Establish "Centre of Sustainable Forestry" and class "GIS and Aerospace methods" in MarSTU.
- Organize Intensive courses in English and German for MarSTU teaching staff.
- Make student and post-graduate exchange between Universities-partners of the Project.
- Popularize the results of the project via Internet and publication.
- Broaden international cooperation of MarSTU with EU Universities.
"ÃGlobal Warming and Forests of Povolgie"
The International seminar was held in the Mari State Technical University in Yoshkar-Ola, Russia, on May 25-27, 2001.The seminar was held with the help of international program "Leaders in environmental sphere and development".
The seminar was supported by INTAS, Grant for Young Scientists for Eldar Kurbanov, #YSF 00-7.
The main objective of the seminar was to attract scientists, students and public attention to the problem of "Global Warming and Forests". The problems discussed touched upon various aspects of the global warning phenomenon: forests of Povolgie, international projects in forestry, sustainable forestry in India, pools of carbon, role of NGO in public opinion forming on ecological and socio-economical issues. The International scientific-practical seminar was represented by scientists and production workers from Russia (Kursk, Samara, Ulan-Ude, Moscow, Yoshkar-Ola, St. Petersburg, Archangelsk), India, Ukraine and the USA
